Walking tour of Sligo town
23rd Mar 2022
Fourth class soaked up the rich history of Sligo town in the sunshine today. Our walking tour included a visit to Sligo Gaol, Sligo Abbey, Sligo Courthouse and St. John's Cathedral. We covered many aspects of the History curriculum including the industrial revolution, the Great Famine, the cholera epidemic and W.B Yeats' connections with Sligo. Fourth class were shocked to learn that children as young as six were imprisoned in the jail during the 1800s. The most common crimes committed by the children included pickpocketing and stealing food. Our sincere thanks to Mel from Sligo Walking Tours for a very enjoyable and educational morning.
