Sixth Class Visit Carrowmore Tombs.
22nd Sep 2023
On Friday 15th September, the rain held off so that Sixth class could enjoy an inspiring trip to the Carrowmore Tombs Complex. Our guide gave us an informative and interesting tour of some of the monuments on the site. He outlined the progression of passage tombs from early examples to the more sophisticated cairn located in the centre of the complex. The pupils learned about the lives and beliefs of our ancestors from the Mesolithic and Neolithic eras. We were given an insight into burial rituals and customs of the time and also recounted myths associated with the surrounding area. It was particularly intriguing to find that Carrowmore was not only a prehistoric cemetery but also a place of celebration.
