Science Week Third Class

12th Nov 2021

To celebrate science week, Third Class completed some investigations and experiments. They helped Mr Perfect find the best coin cleaner for his dirty copper coins by investigating a number of different products. They discovered that vinegar and ketchup worked best to clean the coins as they both contain an acid that dissolves the copper oxide (dirt).

We learned how to measure our heart rate this week and found our max heart rate. After our PE lesson, our heart rate went up.

There was great excitement trying to figure out how to get an egg to float in a bowl of water. Some great suggestions were given but it was the connection with the Dead Sea that helped the students realise that salt would work best. Ten tablespoons of salt were added to the water and our egg floated! It was still floating three days later in the saltwater.

We carried out an experiment to see could we walk on air! We blew up six balloons and placed a table on top of them. We managed to get four pupils on the table without bursting the balloons. Some children jumped on the table successfully and others even did sit ups and push ups without the balloons bursting.

The students enjoyed a webinar on Friday with meteorologist Joanne Donnelly. Some students recognised her from RTE. She answered some really interesting questions from students all over Ireland.

Friday was the highlight for Third class as they had the opportunity to see dry ice in school. They saw the frozen carbon dioxide (dry ice) sublimate directly into a vapour. Dry ice does not melt into a liquid, instead it changes directly into a gas. A lovely way to finish up science week in Third Class.
