We were very busy during Maths Week investigating the best way to mentally add numbers within 20. We used ten frames and counters to explore the part-whole method. The part whole model is a way of representing the relationship between a ‘whole’ and its component parts. The part whole model is a useful model for students to learn and utilise as it will assist with addition and subtraction later in their mathematical journey.
We discovered that we can split numbers so that we can add more quickly.
