First Class walk to The Model Niland Gallery

28th Nov 2022

The historians of First Class learned about Local Landmarks this week. We discussed the elements of continuity and change with regard to some noteworthy buildings. Kilkenny Castle was initially a wooden structure, the round tower in Glendalough was primarily to keep treasure safe and when a surprisingly large number of pupils claimed to have kissed the Blarney stone….well, Ms. Conheady wasn’t surprised!

We decided to visit an impressive building in our own locality with strong links to Carbury. Ms Mc Mahon accompanied us to No.22, The Mall. The Model School is the birth place of Carbury. This beautiful building of limestone and sandstone opened it’s doors as a school in 1863 with classrooms to the right of the front door and teachers’ living quarters to the left.  This historical place of interest is now known as The Niland Gallery and we hope it continues to serve the people from Sligo and beyond for many years to come.
