Fifth Class get Creative
A writing workshop with Gerry Boland
Fifth Class thoroughly enjoyed their creative writing workshop hosted by Sligo County Library on Friday, 9th October. Sligo’s Town Mayor, Hubert Keaney, was in attendance. He greeted the pupils and welcomed them to the literacy festival. Our future mayors tried on his Chain of Office. Gerry Boland was the writer in residence for the event. He began by reading an extract from his book “Marco Moves In” and the children were invited to write a passage that described what happened next. Gerry shared his wisdom regarding “writer’s block” and gave the pupils a fool proof method of beginning a narrative piece of writing. They all indulged in their creativity and delivered inspiring pieces of writing, praiseworthy from the writer himself. His challenging “Alphabet Story”, a piece of prose containing eleven random words beginning with the same letter, was the highlight of the morning. It’s amazing the stories that can be created from words like; Yorkie, Yorkshire and YOLO, to name but a few.
